The distinctive sound that makes Keston Cobblers' Club so unique comes from a desire to create contemporary, catchy music, fused with the wholesome grittiness of traditional folk.
Inspired by an upbringing surrounded by unusual instruments, folk music and country dance combined with a taste of the 21st century popular music scene, Matthew Lowe and his sister Julia grew up writing and performing music from an early age. Their parents were fervent musicians, of both traditional and contemporary backgrounds and a home full of different instruments for them to “tinker with” and play. Like many girls her age, Julia was an avid performer and participated in many shows, concerts, pantomimes, and musicals, later discovering that she favoured writing and singing her own songs. She would often sing with her father accompanying on guitar and played a bit of piano herself. Matthew, having studied music at school, came from a more technical stance, also with the ability to compose harmonic scores and fable-like lyrics. Leaving Camberwell college of arts to pursue a life in music, he was soon collaborating with Julia, composing and performing their tight harmonies and catchy melodies together. In 2007, Tom Sweet and Dan Rymer Trenholme, two of Matthew's old school friends joined him and Julia, and the four began to regularly play music together in their parent's living room, much to their mother's anguish! Daniel, an experienced drummer and former member of a local metal band, brought heavier musical influences to the group, whereas Thomas, a grade 8 trumpeter and tenor singer in a barber shop quartet helped to enrich the vocal harmonies of the band.
Eventually, in (2009) on a warm summer's evening, Keston Cobblers' Club was born. It was decided that rather than stick to one genre, each member would bring their own influences and combine them to create a new, distinctive sound. From sweeping Synths and electric beats to Eastern European ensembles and brass bands, KC Club embrace laid back, easy listening melodies along with close harmonies that will leave you foot tapping and humming along.
